Curriculum

Taba in Curzon (2004, p185) Armitage, et al (1999) looks at exploring the curriculum and asks why our courses look the way they look, how they may have developed and how we can understand our courses better in order to help improve the quality of our student’s learning. It also covers definitions of ‘curriculum’ â€Å"The curriculum is a formal course of study as at a college, university or training provider† This is a definition with which I agree, or it is â€Å"†¦ he public form of attempting to put an educational idea into practice† which shows just a few diverse set of definitions. The definitions range from showing and making an impact to the teacher and training planning and also with the planning across my college. Key issues in defining ‘curriculum’ include statements of what is to be learned, pointers as to the outcomes of this learning and explanations about the vision behind the curriculum. It has begun to expose and con sider our own ideas about curriculum.Goodson (1994, quoted in Armitage, et al 1999) makes the interesting point that, while curriculum development and implementation have been written about by so many people, the more fundamental issues of curriculum definition, who constructs it, why and for who have been more neglected. This is something which I have often questioned myself. Wilson (2009) discusses the context of ‘Widening Participation’ within the curriculum and how in this design of curriculum the requirements of groups are and was then considered. In some cases Education may need to be taken into other settings and contexts such as prisons or detention centres, the curriculum would then need to be adapted to suit this particular group of learners. The curriculum of delivering say mechanicals such as curriculum that they offer within other colleges that I am now aware of, would need to be adapted in prison to take consideration and understanding of the tools and equi pment such as sharp pillar’s that may be involved. The work of Wilson (2009) emphasises the curriculum choices in the FE (Further Education) sector are now principally influenced by funding and that funding is now a strong need into how curriculum is given. The funding bodies’ research that sociality requires employment and social need. Coffined (2008, p44) suggests that â€Å"not everything demanded can be afforded â€Å"and argues the question â€Å"who is making the demand†.

How to Win a Student Election, by a Former Class President

How to Win a Student Election, by a Former Class President SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Hoping to be your class president? Winning the position takes a lot of work, but you can absolutely make it happen. Why should you trust me?I was my Junior Class President and Student Government President my senior year, so I know what it takes to get there. In this article, I've outlined every step you need to take to become class president: starting with just getting on student council freshman year, all the way through running ina big election as a senior. Why Do You Want to Be Class President? Before I talk about how to get elected, I want youto think about why you want to become class president. Do you want to improve school dances? Do you want to have a wider variety of school lunch options? Create a class field trip? Start a fundraiser? All of these reasons are legitimate. You need to figure out what your own goal is. If you're having trouble, sit down and brainstorm. Think about all the events your student government plans. Which did you attend? Were there issues at these events? What could have been done better? Is it something you could change? This brainstorming should lead you to some ideas of why you want to become president of your class or school. Why do you need a reason to want to be class president? It'll keep you motivated during your campaign, and it'll help you explain to your classmates why they should vote for you. I'll delve into this in-depth later on in this article. First, I'll go over the two major steps you need to follow in order to run a successful campaign. Step 1: Start Early If you want to be president of your class or high school some day, you need to start working towards that goal early. Plan to join student council your freshman year, but don’t expect to be elected president.Freshman student council elections are usually a mess.Freshman elections typically happen within a month of starting school, so no one knows each other. The person elected president is usually the person whose name other students have heard the most. It’s not usually based on competence or trust. My recommendation for freshman student council elections: Run for one of the â€Å"smaller† offices such as secretary or treasurer. There is usually less competition for these positions, so you’ll have a better shot of being elected.During freshman year, your aim should just be to get on the council. Once you're on it, you’ll be able to prove your effectiveness as a leader and can start the climb towards president.I was elected Freshman Treasurer, and then Sophomore Vice President, and then Junior Class President. Butby starting early, I don’t just mean joining the council early... Step 2: Maintain Relationships You need to work from the start to build relationships with your classmates so that they know and trust you. This is the most important step to becoming Class President. Students want to elect someone they like and know is competent.Be a leader in the classroom.Participate in class discussionsandget good grades, it’s how you’ll prove your competence.Don’t be the class clown or the student who’s always on their cell phone or asleep. Interact with the students around you.Sit with different groups at lunch.Talk to them about their concerns and what changes they’d like to see happen at the school. If you’re not currently on student council, ask if you can attend their meetings. Some student councils allow students who’re interested in joining to sit in on their meetings, and some host an occasional meeting (monthly, bi-monthly, annual, etc.) for students who’re not on the council to voice their concerns and ideas. Also, if you’re not currently on student council, ask members of student council if they need help with their events. It’s a great way to test out student council to see if it’s right for you, and it's also a great way to show you’re fit to be on student council/leading student council. With my advice, you won't be quite so lonely! How to Run a Winning Election The two steps I mentioned above will start you on the path to becoming president of your class, but to run a winning election you’ll need to do more. #1: Get Your Name Out There To win an election, you need to marketyourself.Start by creating aslogan, even if it’s as simple as â€Å"Lauren for Junior Class President.†You want to use one slogan for your campaign that will be used on all of your marketing materials so that your name becomes recognizable. If you don't come up with one slogan and instead use multiple slogans or designs, peoplemay get confused. You want one good slogan that you'll use across all of your material to ensure a clear, focused campaign that'll create name recognition. Think about all of the US presidential campaigns; the posters always have one design from which they never stray. #2: Put Up Posters With YourSlogan The posters can be super simple; even just a print out of the slogan on normal computer paper will work. However, you should have a lotof them. The exact number will vary proportionally to the number of students in your class (or school, if you’re running for the overall Student Government President). What I mean by that is if your class has 100 students, 10 posters may be enough, but if you have 1000 students in your class, you may want to put up 50 or more posters.Count on some posters being ripped down or disappearing. Most schools have rules against this, but it’s hard to catch someone ripping down a poster.Plan on making extras. NOTE: You may not be able to use all of my suggestions above. Different schools have different campaign rules. For example, some schools don’t allow you to hand anything out. Check with a teacher or school administrator to make sure you know what the rules are. What’s the Point of Marketing Yourself? You won’t win an election if people don’t know who you are and whyyou’re running. As I said before, students want to elect peoplethey like and know are competent.Even if you’re a leader in the classroomandgetting good grades, if you’re in a class of 1000, you may not know half of your classmates. You want the other half of students who don’t know you personally to know your name and to talk about you with their friends. Posters help create name visibility.People will start to recognize your name and will hopefully start to talk to their friends about you. Handouts (i.e. stickers or pencils) also help create name visibility and offer you an opportunity to meet more students you don’t know.At lunch time, travel around your cafeteria, walk up to people you don’t know and ask if they’d like a sticker or pencil. It’s a GREAT excuse to talk to people and will give you an opportunity to convince them to vote for you. Make sure you tell them why you want to be president. As I mentioned earlier, whatever reason you decided to run (whether it was to improve school dances or improve the lunch menu) tell it to them!Ask them what they’d like to see happen at the school next year. Show them you’ll be a good listener as well as a good leader! #4: Ace Your Campaign Speech Some schools have candidates give speeches or debate. My school did not.If your school allows you to give a speech, definitely do so! Here are my recommended points to hit in your speech/debate. Introduce yourself (It may seem obvious, but it will helpstudentswho may not know you). â€Å"Hi, I’m Lauren Jones, and I’m running for Junior Class President.† Say why you want to be president and why you’re qualified. Your qualifications will bea combination of personal characteristics and past experiences and successes. â€Å"I'm responsible and agood listener. I served as Sophomore Class VP and fundraised more than $1,000 for the Red Cross.† State your platform (what you plan to do differently). â€Å"I plan to move our school dance to the Marriott Ballroom instead of our gym.† Say how you plan to accomplish your goals. â€Å"I will raise the money to move our dance to the Marriott Ballroom by hosting a school-wide bake sale.† End with your campaign slogan. â€Å"Remember, Lauren for Junior Class President.† These should be the main points you hit, but I’d recommend injecting some humor into it to make it more interesting. However, your speech should notbe too long (I’d recommend 2-3 minutes maximum).Make it concise and to the point or you’ll lose your audience. If you market yourself well along with starting early, building a solid reputation, and maintaining relationships, you'll have yourself a winning campaign! What’s Next? Citrine is also considered a symbol of hope, youth, health, and fidelity (www.houseofonyx.com). The Common Book of Baby and Child Care

The Common Book of Baby and Child Care Dr. Benjamin Spocks revolutionary book about how to raise children was first published on July 14, 1946. The book, The Common Book of Baby and Child Care, completely changed how children were raised in the latter half of the 20th century and  has become one of the best-selling non-fiction books of all time. Dr. Spock Learns About Children Dr. Benjamin Spock (1903-1998) first began learning about children as he grew up, helping take care of his five younger siblings. Spock earned his medical degree at Columbia Universitys College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1924 and focused on pediatrics. However, Spock thought he could help children even more if he understood psychology, so he spent six years studying at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. Spock spent many years working as a pediatrician but had to give up his private practice in 1944 when he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve. After the war, Spock decided on a teaching career, eventually working for the Mayo Clinic and teaching at such schools as the University of Minnesota, the University of Pittsburgh, and Case Western Reserve. Dr. Spocks Book With the aid of his wife, Jane, Spock spent several years writing his first and most famous book, The Common Book of Baby and Child Care. The fact that Spock wrote in a congenial manner and included humor made his revolutionary changes to child care easier to accept. Spock advocated that fathers should play an active role in raising their children and that parents will not spoil their baby if they pick him up when he cries. Also revolutionary was that Spock thought that parenting could be enjoyable, that each parent could have a special and loving bond with their children, that some mothers could get the blue feeling (postpartum depression), and that parents should trust their instincts. The first edition of the book, especially the paperback version, was a big seller right from the start. Since that first 25-cent copy in 1946, the book has been repeatedly revised and republished. So far, Dr. Spocks book has been translated into 42 languages and sold more than 50 million copies. Dr. Spock did write several other books, but his The Common Book of Baby and Child Care remains his most popular. Revolutionary What seems like ordinary, normal advice now was completely revolutionary at the time. Before Dr. Spocks book, parents were told to keep their babies on a strict schedule, so strict that if a baby was crying before its prescribed feeding time that parents should let the baby continue crying. Parents were not allowed to give in to the childs whims. Parents were also instructed not to coddle, or show too much love, to their babies for that would spoil them and make them weak.  If parents were uncomfortable with the rules, they were told that doctors know best and thus they should follow these instructions anyway. Dr. Spock said just the opposite. He told them that babies dont need such strict schedules, that it is okay to feed babies if they are hungry outside the prescribed eating times, and that parents should  show their babies love. And if anything seemed difficult or uncertain, then parents should follow their instincts. New parents in the post-World War II era readily embraced these changes to parenting and raised the entire baby boom generation with these new tenets. Controversy There are some that blame Dr. Spock for the unruly, anti-government youth of the 1960s, believing that it was Dr. Spocks new, softer approach to parenting that was responsible for that wild generation. Other recommendations in the earlier editions of the book have been debunked, such as putting your babies to sleep on their stomachs. We now know that this causes a greater incidence of SIDS. Anything so revolutionary will have its detractors and anything written seven decades ago will need to be amended, but that does not deflate the importance of Dr. Spocks book. It is not an overstatement to say that Dr. Spocks book completely changed the way parents raised their babies and their children.

Business plan structure Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Business plan structure - Coursework Example Firstly, a business premises is a place and hence a physical location from where we distribute our products and meet with our customers. Secondly, through the shop we will be able to determine the appropriate prices for our commodities by analyzing the customer’s reactions. The shop will also enable us to distribute our products and hence the shop will symbolize our products. Finally, through the shop we will be able to carry out advertisement for our products. After analyzing the four P’s for our Students Vault, the second step was to define our mission and vision statements based on our goals and future prospects. The main customers for our business were the university students and therefore our mission and visions had to be in relation to their needs. Our mission also had to incorporate the dynamic nature of their needs and to be flexible enough to include any future needs for a change. As a business team, our mission for venturing into the business was to supply uni versity students with all their stationary and appliances needs for a successful university life. To realize our mission we had to define our vision in the business through a vision statement. A vision statement is a statement is a declaration of anticipations relating to growth and expansion of the business within a given period. In the project, we settled for expansion of our business within the United Kingdom and the diversification of our products as our vision statement3. The vision and mission statement of a business summarizes the four P’s of the business in an implicit way. Through these statements, a business team gives its intentions or plans on achieving the four P’s of a business. The product is an important part of any business, through the product a business is able to realize and launch its competence in the market4. Due to the importance attached to the product, we had to consider our product as an important part of the business plan. Stationery and boo ks were our main products. Our business also dealt with accommodation equipment, electronic devises and catering equipment. These products were intended to fulfill our mission of supplying university students with all their requirements for a comfortable university life. After defining our product, the second important part was the definition of the place or location of our business. Our business team settled for Manchester city as the first target or business location. Unlike other potential locations, Manchester city had a high student’s population due to the availability of many colleges and universities within the city. The city also lacked business dealing with stationeries and students necessities and this implied that our bushiness was unique to the city. Our business plans therefore capitalized on the uniqueness of our business as the basis for our competence. Manchester city also served as an ideal city and therefore establishing our business in the city enabled us t o determine the response of other potential cities towards our business. The price of a commodity determines the success of the commodity in an ideal market5. This implies that in the business plan we had to settle at an appropriate price in order to attract and retain our customers. Students were our target customer and therefore our prices had to be considerate of their financial status and capabilities. In the plan, we settled for a competitive price for all our products. This implies that

Analysis of the Arabian Construction Companys Costs Essay

Analysis of the Arabian Construction Companys Costs - Essay Example ACC tries to minimize costs by cutting down on some of its expenditure. The expenditure on unnecessary variable costs is cut down to ensure efficiency. Analysis of the firm’s market structure Arabian Construction Company is operating in a perfectly competitive market, which has many buyers and sellers. The forces of demand and supply therefore determine the prices of the products offered by the company. Among the competitors of ACC, we have the Larsen & Toubro, which carries out large-scale construction projects and designs. The other is the DLF, which deals in the development of housing and retailing in property as well. The company has developed over 70 million square units of housing projects up to date. The firms in the construction industry do not deal on single products qualifying them to be in a perfect competition form of market. The industry is free to enter and free to exit with very few legal formalities placed by the government governing company registration hence no barriers to entry into the market. Any firm which feels can withstand the fierce competition in the field can enter the market. The firms are also not forced to stay in the market hence they can a lways leave at their pleasure most so if they are not able to compete favorably (Etro & Federico, pg.132). The firms in this market are therefore neither price takers nor price makers; the forces of market, which are the forces of demand and supply, dictate the prices of their outputs. Profits are therefore highly regulated.

The House of Tata Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

The House of Tata - Term Paper Example Keeping this in mind, it was obvious for Tata to take certain new initiatives such as promoting Tata brand collectively for all group companies; find a strong partner for joint ventures; groom young leaders in-house and so on. Creating a unified brand by Tata Sons is certainly a strategic move with long-term ramifications. It is true that Tata name itself is a guarantee of quality among Indian consumers but in a free market regime, Tata group of companies will have to compete with formidable international brands in several segments of the businesses that include automobiles, chemicals, domestic appliance business, and many more. Promoting Tata brand will consolidate brand equity not only in the national but also international market too. It is true that certain companies in the Tata fold such as Indian Hotels does not use Tata name because ‘Taj Group of Hotels’ (the way it is known as) has itself become a name to reckon with in the hotel business in India; however, while raising money from abroad, the Indian Hotel did exploit Tata name while conveying to international community and that itself is a proof that Tata is a brand that each group company would always like to identify with at some point of time. The cost that each company will have to pay to Holding company, Tata Sons, is certainly a fraction of the benefits that they will derive nationally and internationally in the long run. This is a much required initiative on part of Tata Sons unifying all the companies with a common brand. Similarly, divesting a 20 percent stake in Tata Industries Limited to the Jardine Matheson of Hong Kong is another bold and strategic move. With the economic liberalization, Tata knew that retailing and distribution, financial services businesses in India would grow at a rapid pace and they would need a partner that possessed not only rich experience in such businesses but also ready to invest substantial sums in new ventures. Jardine group of Hong Kong was certai nly a perfect choice as a partner for many new ventures that Tata Industries was contemplating to embark on with the long term view of strengthening the corporate portfolio. While India moved decisively to a free market economy, the bountiful of opportunities emerged for large houses. The house of Tata was no exception to it. Ratan Tata was quick to realize that they would need a plenty of young talents if they needed to grow at fast pace taking advantage of the numerous opportunities that were lurking ahead. Keeping this perspective in mind, Ratan Tata launched Tata Administrative Services (TAS). The sole purpose was to groom future leaders hiring them young rather than recruiting people tainted with ‘outside culture’, it was a much better foresight to train and nurture young talents in-house. TAS was designed such that young management graduate â€Å"would gain exposure to three different industries through planned job rotation within the Tata companies" (Khanna, Pal epu and Wu, 8). The program was designed to "foster leadership, teamwork and group values" (Khanna, Palepu and Wu, 8). This way, not only young management recruits will be nurtured with required management skills but also be groomed with proper leadership qualities imbibing the spirit of 'Tata culture' at a fairly young age. After all, Tatas have been hugely popular in India because of their good quality products and ethical business practices for last several decades and that spirit must continue in
